Filter plates are a fundamental element of filter presses for liquid filtration. This element acts as a support piece to place the filter fabric that will allow the separation of solid particles in a liquid medium. Selecting the right filter plate is essential to achieve efficient and reliable filtration. Its choice depends on the specific application and the characteristics of the liquid to be filtered.
Plates can be made of different materials, such as polypropylene, stainless steel or aluminum, depending on the specific application. The plate will be provided with its own characteristics of resistance to corrosion, abrasion and temperature depending on the material used.
The filtration process with filter plates for filter presses is quite simple. The liquid to be filtered is introduced into the chambers formed by the plates and pressure is applied to the assembly. As the liquid is filtered through the cloths, solid particles accumulate on their surface, forming a cake. Once the filter cake reaches a certain thickness, the filtration process is finished and this filter cake is removed from the plates.
There are different types of filter plates for filter presses: chamber plates and membrane plates, mainly.
Chamber plates have a cavity in the center that is filled with mud during the filtration process. As pressure is applied, the liquid is filtered through the fabrics present between the plates, retaining the solid particles and allowing the liquid to pass through.
On the other hand, membrane plates are designed with a special elastic membrane that is used to improve the efficiency of the filtration process. In the operation of the filter press, when pressure is applied, the membrane deforms, increasing the pressure on the paste or suspension to be filtered. This action helps to increase the efficiency of the separation of the liquid and solid components.
